New Zealand: Inland Revenue’s Refreshed Strategy

John Nash - 5 January 2024

New Zealand Inland Revenue (NZIR) has revisited its strategy now that its major business transformation programme is complete, and the department is operating in a very different environment.

The refreshed strategy is simply called ‘Our Strategy’ and replaces the current NZIR mission and vision. It shares our new aspiration – improving oranga (health and wellbeing) for current and future generations – we make our biggest contribution to oranga through economic activities including collecting and distributing money. ‘Our Strategy’ also describes the three broad roles we have:

Ø  Being effective and efficient – doing what we do in the best ways for the best results,

Ø  Stewardship – actively making sure what we are responsible for is fit for purpose today and tomorrow, and

Ø  Making a broader contribution – working across the public service to deliver more for Aotearoa New Zealand.

This recognises that it is through doing these three roles that we will be able to achieve our outcomes.

‘Our Strategy’ will guide our work and help us to prioritise and plan based around where we can deliver the most value. It connects to our annual planning and prioritisation process, which guides what we do each year. Annual priorities are shared through Eke Tangaroa (our enterprise plan) and inform the development of business plans for every area in the organisation.

While it will guide the strategic direction for the whole organisation, its impact will be different depending on what part of the organisation people work in and their respective roles. Having ‘Our Strategy’ is a really exciting step for us as we look ahead to what we can deliver for our customers and New Zealand as we move into 2024 and beyond.
