CATA to participate in high level UN Conference

The Secretary General of the Commonwealth Mr Kamalesh Sharma has invited CATA’s Executive Director to be part of the Commonwealth delegation to the 3rd UN International Conference on Financing for Development scheduled to take place from the 13th to 16th July in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Conference that will bring together heads of States and Governments including several international organizations is set to discuss how the UN Millennium Development Goals would be financed in the post 2015 period.

Given the critical role that domestic resource mobilization is expected to play in financing the development agenda of most countries, CATA (as one of the largest intergovernmental tax organizations) would participate in discussions exploring ways in which taxation can play an effective role in financing development especially in the low and emerging economies.

The Conference comes at a time when Official Development Assistance in the area of tax is seeing a major decline and at a time when many revenue administrations are undertaking critical reform initiatives including capacity building and governance reforms. This is one of the major areas of concern that hopefully will be addressed by the Conference.

CATA will use this forum to put on the table for discussions certain issues that have been raised by the members and also add the “Commonwealth” voice to some of the ongoing debates on contemporary international tax issues.

Mr Deodat Maharaj, the Deputy Secretary General will lead the Commonwealth delegation.
